Four Things for Four Leaves: Saint Patricks Day Celebrations
/Four Leaf Clovers…Four Things for St. Patrick’s Day. Gosh, I feel clever. Must be the clever leprechaun in me since I’m a whomping 25% Irish. So you should take all my Irish recommendations very seriously.
I kid.
Secretly, I love that I’m part Irish. My dad went and got duel citizenship, which is pretty cool. So we definitely celebrate on March 17th. I came up with four ways to help you celebrate as well. I could add a fifth idea of wearing green, but I take that as a given. And if these ideas aren’t enough, I have more on a past post I wrote in 2018.
What do you do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Sláinte!!
Four Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
1. Eat.
I’m probably going to make either Shepard’s Pie (recipe here) or Easy Beef Stew (recipe here) with Irish Soda Bread (maybe this recipe) for dinner on St. Patrick’s Day. My husband might beg me to make this Dublin Coddle (recipe here), though. And I always love Irish Colcannon as a side dish (recipe here). Oh, the choices. But honestly, when I was in Ireland, I didn’t see any corned beef at the restaurants…maybe it’s a home-cooked thing or possibly an American Irish thing. But, they did have lots of potatoes and brown bread.
2. Treat
I was at the grocery store and grabbed some Lucky Charm cereal. I wonder how much more they sell during the month of March. Not really traditional Irish stuff here, but we all know and love the little marshmallows. So,I might just make these Lucky Charm Cereal Milk Confetti cupcakes (recipe here) or perhaps Lucky Charm Krispie Treats (recipe here). Oh, I’ve made these Bailey’s Chocolate cookies in the past (recipe here), but I’m making treats for the kids and this just doesn’t feel like something I should give them (but they are good).
3. Watch
Seriously, there is a real lack of Irish movies for kids. I can suggest some movies for parents that maybe older kids could watch, but there isn’t much for young kids. When I was young, we watched Darby O'Gill and the Little People, but I watched it again a few years ago and it wasn’t nearly as good as I remembered (perhaps because the film quality is not great being from 1959?!).
The ones I suggest for parents? Well, there is Waking Ned Devine, The Matchmaker, Brooklyn, Derry Girls (TV show), Michael Collins, Once, Philomena, and Rebellion (TV show). Oprah has a list as well.
4. Play
I’m thinking we’ll make a leprechaun trap this year. I hadn’t heard of this until last year when our friends made one. You just build a box with traps to try an capture the little guy and get all his gold. Or, I might do some more things with Lucky Charms like this Lucky Charm Sort (and eat). I see a lot of fun ideas over here on ABCDee Learning.
